Dear Mr. Neil Gaiman,

Pardon me for adressing you in this letter in an oh, so formal way. But, hey, you are probably one of my biggest crushes in the literary world.

It all began when I was an angsty lovesick teenager… of about 13 or 14 years? Anyway, I came across a quote from you about love in the internet, which said the following:

«Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life…You give them a piece of you. They didn’t ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn’t your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like ‘maybe we should be just friends’ turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It’s a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.»

I did not really hate love, but I did felt very identified with it. And I figured that I had to read more about this man who wrote this words that were as if someone had taken an x-ray of my heart and written it down. More than 10 years later, I am not an angsty lovesick teenager anymore and I can say that my literary love for you has not only not died but it has evolved.

I went on and majored in Creative Writing and Literature, and I may say something about you that it’s not true about a lot of writers that I have loved in between. I loved you before college, I loved you during college and I still love you after college. And I think it’s really hard for that kind of literary love to remain through those stages in a Literature major, but mine for your writing and twisting words did. In fact, I believe that it has grown. I mean, you have written children’s books, graphic novels and an episode from Doctor Who, among other things. What else is there to ask for? My goal before was to be like Oscar Wilde, to write a good play, a good poem and a good novel. BUT if I managed to somehow produce a good children’s book, a good graphic novel, and (it’s ok to dream) and a good Doctor Who episode I could die a happy woman.

I am not someone who is easily starstruck, but last year when I went to New York in February for the first time I was devastated to find that I would miss you at Strand Bookstore by a week, and let me tell you that I would have been quite starstruck.

I love your writing because I find it quirky and honest, and I think I am quirky and honest myself. And sometimes I feel a bit disappointed in myself, because lately I have not been making good art and I think there’s not enough quirky and honest good art out there. But I will, or I will try at least and one of the reasons for me trying to is because you have inspired me. Please forgive my corniness, but hey, it’s Valentine’s Day.

Querido Neil Gaiman:

Horrible, ¿no?
